निलेश ओक यांचे काही शोध तपासल्यावर मी असं ठरवलं की या कार्यात खारीचा वाटा म्हणून का होइना आपणही काही हातभार लावावा. त्यातंच त्यांच्या इग्रजी पुस्तकांचं मराठीत भाषांतर करण्यासंदर्भात त्यांच्याशी संवाद झाला. परंतू त्याआधीच तसं काम सुरू असल्याचं त्यांनी सांगितलं. पण त्यातली खगोलशास्त्राची ओळख करुन देणारी तीन प्रकरणं मी करू शकतो असं त्यांनी सांगितलं आणि माझ्या हातून ते काम झालंही.
ज्योतिशास्त्रे ही अति जटील ।

त्यांचे youtube वर अनेक video पहिल्यावर असं लक्षात आलं कि त्यांच्या अनेक दर्शकांना हे खगोलीय संदर्भ समजण्यास जड जात आहे, आणि वेळे अभावी प्रत्येकाला पुन्हापुन्हा ते समजावून सांगणं निलेश जीच काय पण कोणाच संशोधकाला शक्य होणार नाही. यात आपण दोन बाजू बघू शकतो, एक तर निलेश जी म्हणतात तसं ‘तुम्हीही शोधायचा प्रयत्न करायला हवं, अर्थ लक्षात नाही आला तर स्वत: शोधण्याचा प्रयत्नही न करणं आणि उगीच प्रश्नावर प्रश्न विचारणं हे नूसतं तामसिक कुतूहल झालं.’ हे बऱ्याच अंशी खरंच आहे म्हणा. पण याला दुसरीही बाजू आहे. खगोल इत्यादी विषयाची तितकीशी ओळखंच नसल्यामुळे, खरं कुतूहल असल्यामुळे आपल्याला अनेक प्रश्न पडतात व ते संशोधकांना विचारावेसे वाटतात. पण पुन्हा तोच प्रश्न येतो. वेळे अभावी किंवा इतर कारणांमूळे त्यांच्याकडून प्रत्येकाला उत्तर मिळणं अशक्य होतं.
त्यातूनंच माझ्या मनात हा विचार आला की 3D visualisation इत्यादी वापरून सोप्या पद्धतिेने या खगोलीय संकल्पना आपणंच का मांडू नयेत? आणि या ‘Astronomy 101 project’ ची सुरवात झाली.
अगणित ज्योतिंचे तू धाम ।
सृष्टिकर्ता हेच तुझे नाम ।
तूची कृष्ण आणि तूची राम ।
तूची दे मती ।। ११ ।।
परमेश्वरास प्रार्थना केली की तुच हा विचार पेरलायसं, तुच सतत प्रेरणा देत आहेस, आता हे कार्य करण्यासाठी लागणारं बळही तुच दे.
तुझ्या कृपेमुळेची घडते ।
व्याख्या मनामधे बहरते ।
संकल्पना अशी व्यक्त होते ।
काव्यामधूनी ।। १२ ।।
आणि आपण करतो तरी काय? सर्वतर त्याच्याच कृपेने होतं. अशा खगोलिय संकल्पना कशा मांडता येतील यावर विचार करता करताच, त्याच्या कृपेने ओळींना ठेका येतो, शब्दांना छंद येतो, या संकल्पना काव्यातून व्यक्त होउ लागतात.
तीन पदे अशी यमकाची ।
एकसम संख्या अक्षरांची ।
पद परी चवथे भिन्नची ।
अक्षरी पाच ।। १३ ।।
नियमित नसेल तर ते काव्य कसलं. ‘छंद जमला नाही की तो मुक्तछंद’ म्हणायचं हे काही बरोबर नाही. माझ्याकडून जे लिहिलं जात आहे त्या काव्याचा नेमका छंद कोणता हे मला नाही सांगता येणार, पण मी तरी याला अष्टक असं म्हणतोय. या प्रत्येक ‘अष्टकातील’ पहिल्या तीन ओळी यमक जुळणाऱ्या आहेत आणि त्यांच्यातील अक्षरांची संख्याही समानंच आहे. बहुतेक वेळी दहाच आहे. आणि शेवटची ओळ वेगळी, पाच अक्षरांची आहे. सगळी मिळून एकांकी बेरीज ‘८’. (१० + १० + १० + ५ = ३५ आणि ३ + ५ = ८) म्हणुन ‘अष्टकं’ हे नाव मला सयुक्तिक वाटतंय. आणि Astronomy म्हणजे ज्योतिषावर आधारित म्हणून सर्वांना मिळून ‘ज्योतिषाष्टकं’ म्हणता येइल. आणि आता या ‘Astronomy 101’ सिरिज चा तो एक मुख्य भाग झालाय.

वापरल्यास त्या उमजती ।

या सिरिज मधे मी शब्दांच्या जोडीला visuals ही वापरणार आहे. सूर्य, पृथ्वी, चंद्र, इतर ग्रह, तारे, नक्षत्रं यांचा 3D visualisation चा वापर करून आणि इतिहासातील संदर्भांच्या दृष्टिकानोतून आपण अभ्यास करू. त्यांची आकाशातील स्थिती वेळेनुसार कशी बदलत जाते, या खगोलीय वस्तूं पृथ्वीवरून बघताना कशा निरनिराळ्या पद्धतिने जाताना दिसतात, आणि त्यामुळे कालगणनेस कसा उपयोग होतो, अशा अनेक विषयांवर आपण गप्पा मारू.

ही सिरिज खास करून खगोल विषयाचं फारसं ज्ञान नसणाऱ्यांसाठी आहे. मात्र ज्यांना या संकल्पना माहीत आहेत किंवा जे यात विषयात पारंगत आहेत त्यांनीही हे भाग नक्की पाहावेत आणि मला नक्की सुचना कळवाव्यात. आपल्या सर्वाना ही सिरिज नक्किच आवडेल अशी मला खात्री आहे. पुढे येणाऱ्या सर्व भागांचा आपण आनंद घ्यावा अशी मी आपल्या सर्वांना विनंती करतो.

After studying Nilesh Oak’s research, I decided to contribute at least a tiny bit to the grand work. I contacted him and asked if I could translate his work in Marathi. The translation was already in progress. Still, he gratefully allowed me to do a few technical chapters from his book on Mahabharata dating. I was fortunate to finish so.
ज्योतिशास्त्रे ही अति जटील ।
कठीण त्यांची सर्वां उकल ।
करूनी सोपी छान सकल ।
मांडू म्हणतो ।। १० ।।
On seeing his videos on YouTube, I understood that many of his viewers and listeners find it difficult to visualise some complex astronomical phenomena. Due to lack of time, it can become difficult for any researcher, including Nilesh Ji, to explain all those details to every listener. Now, we can see this from two angles. One is, as Nilesh Ji says, “Before asking any questions, please do some background research, check if that is a frequently asked question and the answer might just be there already. Curiosity without any actual digging is just laziness.” And this is true with most. But there is another side to it, too. Even if somebody has genuine curiosity, due to the lack of basic astronomical knowledge, one might develop fundamental queries and want to get the answers from the researcher. But again, it becomes almost impossible for the researcher to answer everybody’s questions.
This thought led me to work on a project that proposes to explain astronomical events in a 3D visual way. And ‘Astronomy 101’ started.

The Almighty inspires us to do all the work. I pray to the Almighty to give me the strength to fulfil this task.
तुझ्या कृपेमुळेची घडते ।

संकल्पना अशी व्यक्त होते ।

After all, what can we do? Everything happens by his grace only. Due to his grace, the thought of an astronomical concept comes to my mind. It then takes a form in Rhythm and metre and ultimately manifests as poetry.
तीन पदे अशी यमकाची ।
एकसम संख्या अक्षरांची ।
पद परी चवथे भिन्नची ।
अक्षरी पाच ।। १३ ।।
If poetry does not have regular rules and metres, then what is poetry in that? Just calling it ‘Free form’ is not real poetry. I don’t know the name of the metre I am composing in Marathi, but I am calling it ‘अष्टक’- Ashtak, i.e. ‘The 8s’. There are four parts to each such Ashtak line. The first three have the exact letter count, usually ten, and the last letters are with the same pronunciation. i.e. Yamak. The fourth line is different, has five letters, and is not in Yamak. So, there are 35 letters total, and their single-digit aggregate is ‘8’. (10 + 10 + 10 +5 = 35 and 3 + 5 = 8). Hence, I think the ‘Ashtak’ name fits very well. It is on ज्योतिष (Astronomy) concepts, so together it can be called as ‘ज्योतिषाष्टके’ (The 8s of Astronomy). And now it has become an inevitable part of this ‘Astronomy 101’ series.

Astronomical concepts can be easily understood using words and visuals. We will explore our planetary system, the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, and so on, using 3D visualisations. We will study this in the context of the Itihas references. We will see how planets’ positions vary in current and historical timelines. We will talk about using astronomical events, as seen from Earth, and how it is helpful to track the timeline precisely.

I will explain these basic astronomical concepts using words and visuals, as well as my limited experience in ‘Engineering and technical visualization’.
