गुरुनेच माझ्या मनातील चिंता ओळखून मला मार्ग दाखवला. गुरुकृपेमुळेच प्रेरणा मिळाली आणि पुढे जाण्याची जणू आज्ञाच झाली. म्हणुन प्रथम गुरु, परमेश्वरास वंदन!

रामायण हे महर्षी वाल्मीकि रचित आदी काव्य आणि महाभारत हे व्यास रचित महा काव्य. हे दोन महान ग्रंथ इतिहास या प्रकारात मोडतात.

त्या ग्रंथांमधे ठिकठिकाणी विविध व्यक्तिंचं, त्यांच्या वेशभूषेचं, त्यांच्या भावविश्वाचं वर्णन आढळतं. त्यातील घटनाक्रमातून आणि त्यांच्या संवादातून तो काळ, त्यावेळची परिस्थिती अक्षरश: आपल्या डोळ्यासमोर येते. नीती-अनीती, सद्सदविवेक अशा अनेक गहन विषयांचं कथारूपातून वर्णन आल्यामुळे ते मनात रुजतं.

एवढंच नाही तर या काव्यातील अनेक उल्लेखांची फोड केली तर आपल्याला तो काळ नेमका कोणता हे देखिल निश्चितपणे शोधता येतं. या महर्षींचं, रचनाकारांचं इतर विषयां-बरोबरंच खगोल शास्त्राचं ज्ञानही किती प्रगल्भ होतं हे पाहून मन स्तिमित होउन जातं. इतिहासात अनेक ठिकाणी रचनाकारांनी मुद्दामंच असे काही खगोलिय संदर्भ मांडलेले आहेत. त्याचा बारकाइने आणि विज्ञानबुद्धीने अभ्यास केला तर ती घटना नेमकी किती वर्षांपुर्वी घडली हे अगदी तंतोतंत सांगता येतं.

धर्माची पुनर्स्थापना करण्यासाठी, सज्जनांचं, साधूजनांचं रक्षण करण्यासाठी आणि दुर्जनांचा संहार करण्यासाठी वेळोवेळी भगवान नानाविध अवतार घेतात. श्रीराम आणि कृष्णावरारांच्या वेळी ज्या लीला घडल्या, जे प्रसंग घडले ते या इतिहास ग्रंथांमधून वाल्मीकि किंवा व्यासांनी मांडून आपल्यावर अक्षरश: कृपाच केली आहे. भारतीय इतिहास किती प्राचीन आहे हे याच इतिहासातील तपशिलावरून समोर येतंय. भारतीय संस्कृती इतक्या सहस्रवर्षांपूर्वी किती प्रगल्भ होती हे याच इतिहाच्या वैज्ञानिक अभ्यासावरून सिद्ध होतंय. काहीच हजार वर्षांपूर्वी आर्यन म्हणून कोणा ‘बाहेरून’ आलेल्या लोकांमुळे आपल्याला संस्कृत व संस्कृती मिळाली असे जे खोटे समज पसरवले जातात त्यांचं निदानही रामायण, महाभारताच्या अभ्यासावरून होतं.

या ग्रंथांमधे अनेक वेळा अशी खगोलीय माहिती स्पष्ट न समजल्यामुळे ती वाक्य कूट (गुढ, समजायला क्लिष्ट, अशक्य अशी) वाटतात. कदाचीत रचनाकारांनी मुद्दामंच त्यांची तशी रचना केलेली असावी.

 व्यासांनी महाभारतात ठिकठिकाणी अशी कूटवाक्यं पेरलेली आढळतात. इतक्या वर्षांनंतरही, सध्या उपलब्ध असलेल्या नोंदीवरून तरी, या सर्वांची उकल कोणालाच झालेली दिसत नाही.

याच कूट वाक्यांचा अर्थ लावताना आपली गल्लत होते, त्यातील अनेक गोष्टी अशक्य वाटतात. समजा आपण त्यातील खगोलिय वर्णन सांगाणारे उल्लेख गृहित धरले तर त्यातील घटना गेल्या काही शे वर्षां पर्यंत तर अशक्यंच वाटत होत्या. व्यासांनी किंवा वाल्मीकिंनी हे जे काही खगोलीय वर्णन मांडलेलं आहे ते केवळ अशक्य आहे असंच वाटत होतं. त्यातूनंच पुढे, विशेषत: पाश्चिमात्यांच्या प्रभावामुळे सुंदर पण ‘निव्वळ कवी-कल्पना’ या सदरात मोडलं जाउ लागलं. आणि मग महाभारत आणि रामायणाच्या कालनिश्चितिचे वेगवेगळे अनुमान येत गेले.

रामायण आणि महाभारत या इतिहास ग्रंथांच्या नोंदींचा ज्योतिषशास्त्रीय खगोलशास्त्रीय अभ्यास करुन, निलेश ओक यांनी जो कालनिर्णय केला आहे, तो इतर सर्वच ‘इतिहासकारांच्या’ पेक्षा वेगळा आहे. तो वैज्ञानिक आहे. इतिहासातील उल्लेखांबद्दल जिज्ञासा, कुतुहल, संशय, अर्थानुमान, पाश्वभूमीचं ज्ञान, निश्कर्ष काढताना तर्कसंगत आणि वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिने पाहण्याची पद्धत, अशा अनेक पैलूंमुळे त्यांचं संशोधन अत्यंत अचूकतेने काल निर्णय करतं.

पण कोणतंही विज्ञान म्हटलं की त्याची पुनरावृत्ती करता यायला हवी, ते प्रयोग करुन बघायला हवं, आणि मगंच त्यावर विश्वास ठेवायला हवा. मीही असंच त्यांचे निष्कर्ष पडताळून पाहायचं ठरवलं. काही Astronomy, planatory visualisaion ची सॉफ्टवेअर्स वापरून मी त्यातील काही नोंदी तपासून बघितल्या. आणि काय सांगू- त्या अगदी बरोब्बर निघाल्या.

म्हणजे समजा व्यासदेवांनी एखाद्या घटनेचं वर्णन करताना असं म्हटलं आहे की मंगळ आकाशात अमुक ठिकाणी आहे, त्याचवेळी इतर ग्रह या या ठिकाणी आहेत, इत्यादी. आता एकाच घटनाक्रमाचे असे संदर्भ असल्यामुळे आपण ते planatory softwares मधे तपासून बघू शकतो. तसं बघीतल्यास असं आढळतं की काही सहस्त्र वर्षांपूर्वी आकाशात ग्रहांची अगदी अशीच तंतोतंत परिस्थीती होती. म्हणजे हे वर्णन या काळासाठी बरोबर ठरतं. तर्क संगतपणे असे अनेक एकमेकांना पुरक संदर्भ जोडत गेल्यावर संपुर्ण चित्र समोर येतं आणि वर्ष निश्चित करता येतं. हेच निलेश ओक यांनी केलंय. असे शेकड्यानि असलेले संदर्भ त्यांनी शोधून त्यावरून कालनिश्चिती केल्यामुळे ते पुर्णपणे वैज्ञानिक आहेत.

या वरून हे मात्र निश्चित होतं की असा इतिहासातील घटनांचा कालनिर्णय करण्यासाठी ज्योतिष (Astronomy) हे एक अत्यंत उपयुक्त माध्यम आहे. निरिक्षण अभ्यासून काल/गति गणित करुन, तर्कसंगत आणि वैज्ञानिक अभ्यासाचं साधन म्हणजे ज्योतिष. ‘ज्योतिष म्हणजेच काल’.

At the outset, I salute the Guru and the Almighty. He understood the trouble I was in. It was through his grace and order that I received this order to compose this.

Ramayana, the very first poetry of the world, the आदी काव्य, was composed by Maharshi Valmiki. And the Mahabharata, the most extensive poetry of the world, the महा काव्य, was composed by Maharshi Ved Vyas. These are the two great epics called the Itihasa.

Through these great epics, we get a glimpse of the personalities, the epoch of that time and their thoughts, feelings and so on. The events and the dialogues, presented in a way that we can almost see the story evolving in front of our own eyes, teach us about morality and the discretion between right and wrong. These stories, presented in a relatable form, connect us to the past and its teachings.

Also, if we study the references in the Itihas, we can find the exact timeline of the events. It is surprising to see how much knowledge these Marashis had, even about advanced astronomy. The Iitihas, in many instances, contain purposeful references to some fascinating astronomical phenomena. By studying them with scientific insight, we can figure out the exact time of those events.

From time to time, God incarnates as an avatar to reestablish religion, protect the noble people and destroy the wicked. The great Avatars, like Rama and Krishna, had their Leela on this planet a long ago. Poets like Valmiki and Vyas tell the story in fantastic detail through their poetry. Through such poetry only, we get to understand and learn about the Avatars. It becomes evident that even thousands of years ago, India’s civilisation seemed incredibly advanced. It easily falsifies the ‘narratives’ that some great people called ‘Aryans’ came from outside of India, invaded India a few thousand years ago and brought the Samskrit language and civilisation.

The Itihas contain many cryptic statements related to astronomy. Often, we are unable to decipher them due to a lack of proper understanding.  

For example, Veda Vyas gives many cryptic references in the Mahabharat that are so puzzling that even after several thousands of years, no one seems to have ‘decoded’ them all.

Due to our lack of knowledge and scientific acumen, we often take those astronomical references to be false. Some of the phenomena mentioned have been actually impossible for several thousands of years. This is why most historians consider these statements to be merely poetic embellishments and not facts. 

Nilesh Oak’s research decisively establishes the exact dating of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. He uses the study of Astronomical evidence as the primary method, which is very scientific and different from most historians. Along with astronomy, it emphasises the use of doubt, curiosity, logical analysis, scientific acumen, etc.

Being scientific, before believing in Nilesh Oaks’s research on dates, I wanted to test them using at least simple astronomical data and software. So, I used a few astronomy and planetary visualisation programs and made 3D simulation models. And I was amazed that they all retold the same thing Nilesh Ji pointed out.

For example, during a particular event, Vyasdev mentions that Mars is at a specific location and describes the locations of a few other planets. Now, using modern astronomical data, we can find the exact combination of all those planets to be at the respective locations simultaneously. After studying many such references, a clear picture emerges to tell us the timeline. And Nilesh Oak has done precisely that. Using hundreds of such references, he has scientifically and successfully established the precise dating of the Ramayana and the Mahabharat.

By studying his method, I understood that knowledge of astronomy is the most important thing in deciphering the dates of such events. Astronomy is Time; It is Ganit, observation and logic. It is the science of time and space.
